Up until about two years ago, I lived in the city for over a decade. The energy of city living is big, loud, and limitless, and I loved every moment of it—besides the lack of space. In fact, most people have a small kitchen and very limited counter space. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not complaining. You actually get used to it as time goes on, especially if it’s all you’ve ever really known since moving out on your own. Plus, the best part about this kind of living situation is that it teaches you how to get savvy, scrappy, and clever when it comes to finding shortcuts and saving space in the kitchen!
Consolidating mixing bowls and dishes where possible saves a ton of counter space and makes cleaning up easier later on. Like one-pot meals and sheet-pan dinners, there are many similar clever tips for baking, as well.
Try This Baking Tip To Save Space and Time

Next time you start the mise en place for a recipe, rather than placing your eggs and vanilla extract in two separate bowls, combine them into one. This doesn’t just save space and time, but it will also make your final result even better.
How This Tip Increases Flavor

There’s nothing like the comforting and aromatic warmth of vanilla in any cake or cookie. I don’t know about you, but when a recipe calls for vanilla extract, I have a tendency to bend the rules and add vanilla with reckless abandon. In my book, it’s “the stronger the vanilla flavor, the better!”
Combining vanilla extract and eggs before adding them to batter will enhance the flavor of baked goods because the eggs help to further distribute the flavor throughout the mixture, making the recipe as a whole richer and even more delicious.
More Space-Saving Tips
I’ve got a hat full of tricks for dealing with small cooking quarters. For example, rather than building out, build up. Hang spice racks and floating shelves along the walls to save cabinet and pantry space, store large pots and appliances along the soffit, go Julia Child-style by using a pegboard with hooks to hang pots and pans, and keep a folding step stool in the closet for easy access to all of the above.
