Key Takeaways
- Earlier this year, Starbucks discontinued 13 drinks including a fan-favorite lemonade.
- Thankfully, Trader Joe’s just introduced a new drink that’s a dead ringer for the Starbucks drink we were most heartbroken to see leave stores.
- The new canned beverage is a coffee shop copycat for a third of the price.
You know it’s summer when you hear the clink of ice in a cup, the slurp of a straw, or the pop of a can opening. Alas, the season of cold drinks is finally here!
Just last week, Dunkin’ released its early summer menu, while Starbucks teased its 2025 summer menu a few weeks back. Starbucks announced it’s officially bringing back Berry Refreshers and introducing a new Iced Horchata Oatmilk Shaken Espresso for the warmer weather. However, these new menu additions come at the cost of 13 discontinued drinks, a part of Starbucks’ larger plan to cut down its food and drink offerings by 30% this year. Thankfully, Trader Joe’s just introduced a new drink that’s a dead ringer for Starbucks’ Iced Matcha Lemonade, one of the drinks we were most heartbroken to see leave stores.

While other cafés may carry alternatives to this drink, the convenience and lower cost of a grocery store version is even better. For a limited time, Trader Joe’s is stocking 12-ounce cans of Sparkling Matcha Lemonade, priced at only $1.99 each. The drink combines refreshing, citrusy lemonade with the earthy taste of matcha and light carbonation to make it sparkling. The can even has a super cute design, with a light green background, cursive bubble lettering, and an illustration of a lemon. It practically screams “summer.”
Fans are already raving about the drink on social media. “Just bought it. Tastes awesome. Perfect blend of matcha and lemonade,” one enthusiast commented on an Instagram post by @trader_joes_treasure_hunt. TikTok users posting about the product say that they enjoy how the matcha taste shines through in this drink, unlike some matcha lattes that are diluted by milk and sugar.
Some Trader Joe’s shoppers were initially wary of the drink’s appearance. With its earthy green color, it almost resembles a sparkling green juice. However, even skeptics were converted once they took a sip. “[L]ooks like swamp water but is really delicious,” one wrote in the Trader Joe’s subreddit.
According to instructions on the can, the drink should be swirled gently before opening to ensure any matcha that may have settled at the bottom is incorporated. The drink is best enjoyed cold—we love the idea of pouring it into a glass with nugget ice and a straw to mimic the café experience. Or, you can enjoy the drink straight from the can after chilling in the fridge. Trader Joe’s recommends garnishing the matcha lemonade with a lime wedge, lemon twist, or a sprig of mint. TikTok user @virgomaybe (who claims to be an employee of the store) also recommends adding blueberry or strawberry syrup if you like a sweeter drink.
We’ll be cracking open a can of this refreshing new drink for every occasion, from summer picnics and pool parties to working weekdays when we need a little midday pick-me-up.
