My Nana’s 4-Ingredient Breakfast Is So Good, I Still Make It Decades Later

My maternal grandmother—Nana, as we called her—wasn’t one to make a fuss in the kitchen. A dedicated high school teacher and award-winning math team coach, she’d more likely be found hunched over stacks of homework in the evenings than hovering over dinner on the stove.

That said, she had a few simple recipes mastered. Take, for instance, her hideous-yet-delicious chicken casserole I wrote about last year. Her simplest signature dish, though, is my favorite: cinnamon toast. I absolutely adored Nana’s take on the classic breakfast as a kid, and since she denied me nothing, there was a period where I ate it at least once a day.

You might be wondering: Does one really need a recipe for cinnamon toast? Not necessarily. By and large, most versions are made with a similar collection of ingredients assembled in a similar fashion. But Nana made hers with a nostalgic ingredient that almost everyone will recognize, and it made all the difference—Country Crock®. There were always about 10 of the iconic grayish-brown tubs in her fridge and only one (if you were lucky) actually held the spread. The rest were filled with leftovers or seasonal produce harvested from friends’ gardens. If you weren’t Nana, opening one was always a gamble.

What You’ll Need for Nana's Cinnamon Toast

White bread: Nana was a fan of Sunbeam white bread for this (and all) purposes. I feel sure any store-bought white bread will work just fine, but if you want authentic Nana's Cinnamon Toast, nothing else will do.

Country Crock Original Spread: This spreads smoothly straight from the fridge, so there's no waiting around for it to soften. Its lighter texture means you can slather generously without risking soggy or sunken toast.

Cinnamon-sugar: These days, you can buy a blend of cinnamon and sugar in the spice aisles of most grocery stores. Nana hand-mixed hers, though, and it was quite heavy on the sugar. A ratio of about two tablespoons of white sugar to one teaspoon of cinnamon tastes about right.
