Nothing makes for a better dessert than the combination of sweet and salty. Sea salt-dusted chocolate chip cookies? Chocolate-covered pretzels? If there’s sugar and salt involved, you can always count me in.

I might not have been convinced when people started putting soy sauce on ice cream, but I’m not opposed to unique flavor combinations to spice up sweet treats. So, when I saw a new sweet and salty dessert recipe making its rounds on social media, I couldn’t help but become intrigued. As a matter of fact, I couldn’t get the idea out of my head—and I have a feeling you will feel the same way.

The Viral Cheez-It Marshmallow Treats

I love a good marshmallow cereal treat. Perfectly chewy, sugary, and crispy, they are a fun and easy dessert that pleases most crowds. While I love the classic version made with rice cereal, marshmallows, and butter, there are endless possibilities for changing up this sweet treat, from using Fruity Pebbles and salted caramel to swapping the cereal out for popcorn. Why should only cereal get to be covered with melted marshmallows?

It looks like Cheez-It was asking itself the same question, because it just shared the most unique take on marshmallow bars I’ve seen yet: Cheez-It Marshmallow Treats.

You read that right, Cheez-It is suggesting we mix its signature cheesy crackers with marshmallows, butter, and vanilla extract.

To make the treats, just follow the same steps for marshmallow cereal treats, but substitute Cheez-Its for the cereal. Essentially, all you need to do is melt some butter with marshmallows, then mix with Cheez-It crackers, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a dash of salt for good measure.

If I'm being honest, I kind of see how salty, cheesy crackers might complement sweet, gooey marshmallow fluff—and I imagine these are even more delicious when served warm.

What Fans Are Saying About Cheez-It Marshmallow Treats

After Cheez-It posted a video of the treat on their social media channels, fans rushed to the comments to share their thoughts on the unique idea.

“Made this. Can confirm it's great,” one TikToker said, while another person expressed more skepticism, writing, "This feels wrong."

Various food brands also chimed in with their thoughts. “If loving this is wrong, I don’t wanna be right,” wrote the marshmallow company Jet-Puffed. Subway, on the other hand, just wanted to know: “What mind possibly thought of this[?]”

Other people also weren’t sure about the combination, but they weren’t necessarily mad about the new idea either. "April Fools? Is this good??” one user asked. “Idk if this is satire, but I want it bad,” added another.

In my opinion, it’s difficult to go wrong with marshmallow-covered anything. If Cheez-Its can turn into marshmallow bars, why not try potato chips or Chex Mix next? One thing is sure: Cheez-It definitely got my brain churning, and I can’t wait to get experimenting.
