The first utensil suggestion comes from Mimi Nguyen, a former private chef and co-founder of Cafely, a Vietnamese coffee company. Chef Nguyen enjoys baking in her free time and claims the hobby is more enjoyable with this stainless steel blending fork. “It offers a great grip handle, which reduces the strain on my hand and wrist, especially for recipes that require me to mix a lot of dry and wet ingredients together!” she says. She also loves that it picks up pasta better than any of her other utensils, thanks to the wide-set tines.

Chef Nguyen knows that kitchen tongs are a must-have cooking tool. She recommends this trio of stainless steel tongs in particular, since they come in three different sizes and have a locking mechanism for extra control and compact storage. However, the true highlight for chef Nguyen is their versatility. “My favorite thing about [the tongs] is how I can use them for a lot of stuff like grilling meat, mixing my salad, or even scooping pasta,” she says.

Sometimes the best things come as a surprise; chef Nguyen’s final suggestion was given to her as a gift. She uses this heavy-duty grater to put fresh cheese on pasta dishes and zest lemons for her baking. “It saves a lot of space when stored due to its slender figure, and even has grip-friendly dots that makes it more efficient to use,” she says. You can also use the grater to prepare ginger, chocolate, coconut, and garlic. It comes with a protective case for safer storage.

Baking is both an art and a science. It calls for incredibly accurate measurements and no one knows that better than Carrie Smith, chef-instructor of Pastry & Baking Arts at the Institute of Culinary Education. She recommends this highly accurate (yet affordable) kitchen scale from Etekcity. “This tool is key for baking as well as achieving consistent results in the kitchen,” she says. “I use a scale for feeding my starter, my bread doughs, and every recipe that I make is measured by weight rather than imperial for accuracy.” The scale has well over 122,000 perfect ratings on Amazon.

Speaking of bread, chef Smith’s next suggestion won’t cost you much dough since it’s on sale for $9. “This tool is a must-have for bread and pastry applications from chopping butter to portioning dough,” says the chef-instructor. She also notes that it’s “essential” for cleaning up your workstation. The “blade” of the bench scraper is made of durable stainless steel while the rounded handle is a comfortable plastic. When you’re finished baking, pop the scraper in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

Chef Smith has used her Kuhn Rikon peelers for years and says they’re as sharp as ever. She greatly appreciates the ergonomically designed handle that won’t tire out your hands while you prepare veggies or fruits. “These are great tools to keep in your bar area for cocktails and mocktails,” she adds.
All of these chef-loved tools are simple and affordable, yet incredibly effective. “They not only make cooking easier, but also add a lot more fun to the process!” says chef Nguyen.
