Pyrex Just Got Some Serious Competition

I’ve always been on team glass food storage container. While plastic options can be cheaper and more lightweight, they’re also less durable and more likely to leach microplastics into your food.

So when Caraway reached out with a stylish new upgrade to the brand’s non-toxic kitchen line, I had to try the new food containers out for myself. Besides the pretty color choices, modular design, and thoughtful airtight lid-locking system, something else caught my eye: They’re made using the same type of durable glass as highly sought-after vintage Pyrex.

Generally, there are three types of glassware found in kitchen products: soda-lime glass, tempered glass, and borosilicate glass. (The distinction comes up often in the pyrex vs PYREX debate.) Vintage Pyrex with the logo in upper case lettering—PYREX—is made using borosilicate, which is more resilient to cracks and extreme shifts in temperature. Lowercase lettering—pyrex—is typically made using soda-lime glass, which can be more prone to shattering after accidental drops and high-heat cooking. The company switched from borosilicate to soda-lime glass sometime around the 1950s.

These new Caraway food storage containers are made using, you guessed it, borosilicate glass. I’ve tested plenty of borosilicate kitchen products in the past, but these feel slightly thinner and more lightweight, which is definitely a plus when you’re reaching for a 4-quart container filled with flour on the top shelf.

The 14-piece set comes with two 1-quart small containers, two 2.5-quart medium containers, and one 4-quart container, along with matching airtight locking lids, two metal scoops, and a magnetic storage base.

I fell in love with the lids right away. They’re all the same size, so you don’t have to worry about matching them to the corresponding container, plus the precision-engineered seal is truly airtight. Thanks to the lids, the medium container kept my homemade granola noticeably fresher and looked great while doing it. They even match the ceramic Caraway cookware line with trendy colors, including Cream, Navy, Gray, Perracotta, Sage, and Mist. On the other hand, the lids are a little trickier to clean than others since they’re not dishwasher-safe and the locking tab must be removed before washing. The glass bases are safe to put in the dishwasher, however.

Also included in the Caraway set is a ¼ measuring cup, which came in handy for portioning sugar and flour for baking, and a compact stainless steel scoop, convenient for ingredients I use more often, like rice and granola.

The modular design is a dream for anyone who enjoys an aesthetic, organized kitchen. Each container measures 6 x 6 inches on the bottom and is perfectly stackable. Likewise, the included storage base with a removable “curtain” is ideal for keeping the containers organized on the kitchen counter. The Caraway containers are also available individually, so you can add more to your collection or simply buy what you need.
