The best things in life are often the simplest. Take, for instance, our unassuming (but shockingly satisfying) Normal Chicken recipe.

“My mom used to make it so often that it won this funny title,” says Allrecipes community member MMHASTY, who submitted the 3-ingredient recipe more than 20 years ago.

There’s a reason this aptly named entrée has been a dinner table staple for decades: Even though it comes together quickly with ingredients you more than likely have on hand, it’s anything but boring.

Meet Normal Chicken

You need just three ingredients to make the fuss-free favorite: chicken breasts, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Combine everything in a 9×13-inch baking dish, cover with foil to keep the moisture in, and bake until the juices run clear. That’s all there is to it!

Since the sauces are so salty and bold, you can get away with such a short ingredient list without sacrificing flavor.

Normal Chicken Variations

The beauty of Normal Chicken is its versatility. Here are some ideas to make it your own:

  • Multiple reviewers suggest adding sweetness with two tablespoons to ½ cup brown sugar, which also helps with browning, or squeezing in some lemon juice for a burst of brightness.
  • Craving something slightly more intense? Amp up the flavor with fresh minced garlic and/or ginger.
  • Of course, you can always raid your spice cabinet to make the recipe your own. Try sprinkling in garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or black pepper. If you opted for a low-sodium soy sauce, you might want to add a little salt to taste.
  • Chicken thighs are often cheaper than chicken breasts and work just as well. No matter which cut of chicken you use, use a meat thermometer to make sure it’s cooked to at least 165 degrees F before eating.

What to Serve With Normal Chicken

Variety might be the spice of life, but sometimes it’s OK to keep things uncomplicated. Pair Normal Chicken with basic white rice and steamed broccoli for a low-key meal that’s as healthy as it is tasty.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, replace the rice with a mushroom-packed risotto and the steamed veggies for a meaty broccoli salad.
